Butterscotch sat in the tree that the pack usually met at, staring down at her passing schoolmates. School had been hard and long, dragging on. She hadnt seen her pack often, for Runt had cut anatomy and math, and gym had been dropped, so really the only other pack member she saw had seen all day was Russel. She scanned the ground below her once more, seeing large groups of laughing and giggling girls, and she hoped that Runt would be walking with someone; the majority of these girls picked on her. She spotted Heather swapping spit with the newest member of the football team.
Well at least she wont bother Runt for a bit She thought. Suddenly Alpha walked up leaning against the tree her face expressionless. She was soon followed by Runt and Russel, both abnormally quiet. Butterscotch jumped down from the tree and landed perfectly next to Alpha. There was absolute silence, as greetings where not necessary, not at that moment. They all started off in the same direction, as if it was part of a routine, which it was. They had work to do that night. After getting deep into the woods each took turns going behind a bush, undressing, then transforming into their wolf forms. Alpha was a large black wolf, her eyes still red-brown. Russel was a large wolf, a little larger than alpha was his fur copper-red his eyes still intense green. Butterscotch was a slightly smaller wolf, her fur the color of butter. Lastly Runt was a very small wolf, about the size of a husky, her fur as shock white as her hair.
Is anything important happening tonight? Runt asked, through telepathy, the way the pack communicated when they were in their wolf forms.
Nope, nothing important. Just keep an eye or ear out for unfamiliars. And remember if you find a vampire, which I guarantee to be highly unlikely, DO NOT ATTACK. For all they know we are just regular wolves, so just come and find me. If I am not found call for me, youll know that Ill answer. Oh and remember, if anything goes wrong, give em hell. Alpha said. It was her usual pre-patrol prep speech. It was nothing new, not at all different from the first time she gave it the first night she was pack leader, only four years ago. The others nodded and then the four all went their separate ways. Alpha went north, to check the borders of the forest farthest from the town, Russel went south to check the forest borders closest to the town, Butterscotch headed west and then Runt headed east.
That night, as like all the others that the pack had patrolled, there was nothing to be found. They only ran across a few skunks, brave enough to come close to the larger animals, many squirrels and various other animals that were native to that forest. The four pack members made their way back to the spot where they had parted close to midnight. They lay down in a circle, facing outward before bidding each other a good nights rest. Then they each slowly drifted into a deep sleep.
