Russel looked up at the silver crescent that was the moon, his eyes glistening with unshed tears.
“Russel…?” He whipped around in surprise letting loose a small tear or two. “Russel? What’s wrong?”
“I…” He fell silent for a moment, hesitant, and then he breathed deeply, closing his eyes. “Do you ever wonder why I live alone…in a forest nonetheless.”
“Everyday,” Runt replied truthfully.
“Well…I was born into a pretty abusive family and I wasn’t bitten, but…well, they got pretty frightened. They dumped me in the woods, in pain and afraid. When the pain from the transformation finally faded it was about three days later. After scavenging for food, I ran. I finally settled in the woods of this town and soon enough, Alpha found me. And…well you know the rest.” He shrugged, no longer seeming upset. “Now you and Alpha are the only ones who know…” He chuckled half-heartedly.
Runt was quiet, taking it all in, “so…is that why you were so angry today?” She asked softly. He looked at her for a moment, as if exasperated.
“I was angry because he hurt you, Runt! Sure I’m a little upset that you never told me, but…” He seemed at a loss of words, so he just sighed and hugged her gently. “C’mon. We have school tomorrow. Time for sleep.”
